Christmas is around the corner – I am busy creating warm, cozy crocheted hats and cowels for gifts this season.

With 5mm hook, chain 10, remove hook from loop, rotate chain, insert hook in first ch and keep that chain on hook for the next steps, return loop to hook, ch 74, draw loop through the chain that has been waiting on hook to join in the round.

Round 1: With 4.5mm hook, ch 1, hdc in same ch as join, hdc in each ch around, sl st to join in first hdc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, frontpost-hdc around post of next hdc, [sc in next st, frontpost-hdc around post of next hdc], rep btwn [ ] around, sl st in first sc to join.

Rounds 3-4: Rep Rnd 2.

Round 5: Ch 1, hdc in same st as join, frontpost-hdc around post of next hdc, [hdc in next st, frontpost-hdc around post of next hdc], rep btwn [ ] around, sl st in first sc to join.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in lower back bar (loop) of each hdc around—84 sc.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sk 2 sts, 5dc in next st, sk 2 sts, [sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5dc in next st, sk 2 sts], rep btwn [ ] around, sl st in first sc to join—14 shells.

Round 8: Ch 2 (does not count as st), 3dc in same st as join, [sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2dc*, 5dc in next sc]; rep btwn [ ] ending final rep at *, 2dc in same st as first 3 dc, sl st to join in top of first dc.

Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, [sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 2 dc*, sc in next dc]; rep btwn [ ] around, ending final round at *, sl st in first sc to join.

Repeat Rounds 8 and 9, changing to grey for 3 rounds then back to white for 3 rounds, ending with 3 rounds of grey, when cowl measures approximately 7 to 8 inches, ending with a Round 9.
