Rag Quilt for Uncle Walt

On October 22, 2021 by Pam

My husband’s uncle lives in a long term care home. I decided to create a rag quilt for him for Christmas. After 19 months, we were finally able to visit him again – post Covid – and he is in a wheelchair and so, I decided a rag blanket for him – to throw across his lap during the cold winter days would be perfect. They are simple and fun and it allowed me to try out some of the stitches on my new sewing machine. This is a really great project for anyone and the results are amazing!!

My brand new sewing machine – ready to create beautiful stitches on my rag quilt.

Cut 56 pairs of 5 inch squares out of a variety of pieces of felt.
Cut 56 pieces of THICK batting that are slightly smaller (about 4 1/2 inches) square.

Sandwich the batting between the squares of felt.

Using a variety of stitches, quilt around the center of each block. I used a variety of stitches in different shapes, as well as printing my uncle’s name on one square in each row (so the blanket will not get lost in the long term care home).

With a wide stitch, sew the blocks together, creating a blanket that is 7 blocks wide and 8 blocks long.
The next step is to clip every seam….

I clipped all around the outside edges to finish the quilt and then washed it in cold water and dried it in the dryer…fluffed it up and it is ready for Uncle Walt for Christmas.
