Mug (or Wine Glass) Rugs

Are you looking for a fun gift for a friend or a favourite teacher? These mug rugs (or wine glass) rugs are easy to make. You just need a bit of terry cloth (an old towel will do), some scraps of fabric, a bit of batting and some fabric for the backing.

Cut out a 6 – 1/2 inch square of terry cloth – cut out seven 2 – 1/2 inch squares out of any kind of cotton.

Sew the 3 squares together and attach to one side of the terry cloth square. Sew the 4 squares together and attach to the others side of the terry cloth square with the row of three attached. Cut a piece of flat (not puffy) batting the size of the square. Cut out the batting – put the batting and square right sides together and put the batting on top. Sew all around the outside, leaving a 2 inch gap so that you can turn it right side out. Sew a narrow seam all around the outside of the rug to close the cap.
Draw the wine glass (or coffee mug – or anything else) in the center of the terry cloth and stitch around it using a very narrow zig-zag stitch (in order for it to show up on the terry cloth).
