Table Runners – A Great Place to Start Quilting
On April 21, 2023 by PamIf you want to start quilting, consider starting with a table runner. It can be as large or small as you want it to be and it can be put together in one piece, or in hexagons, or blocks, etc. You can applique something onto a table runner. Modern homes don’t tend to have a lot of surfaces for table runners and so they are often seen in older homes – they do enhance a dining room table and you can put them on dressers or coffee tables. They are very fun to create to celebrate a holiday – you can pull them out for Easter or Christmas or Thanksgiving and then tuck them away the rest of the year. You can also use them as a wall hanging (I have one that I hang on my French doors for Christmas).
The one I just created is one of my favourites. I pre-purchased the squares (they are pinked) at a quilt shop). When I purchased the squares, they came with a pattern. Many quilt shops have kits that you can purchase when you first start quilting…and they are often worth the money. This table runner is large enough to almost cover my dining room table but, it still allows the beautiful wood to peek out the sides. I have three spots in my house for table runners – my dining room table, my coffee table and the shelf or ledge beside my front door.
If you want ideas for table runners – just do a search on this blog and you will find many ideas and lots for beginners. Starting with hexies is a great way to get your feet wet – if you check out some of my “quilt blog” posts you will find others. You can always message me if you want some tips or encouragement. You can also use up LOTS of scraps of fabric doing table runners. All in all – they are fun and this one looks stunning in my dining room (in all seasons).
