Movember 2023
On November 19, 2023 by PamEvery year when Movember rolls around, it has deep meaning in our family. Just over a year ago, Charles had life-saving surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton. It was nerve-sparing robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Charles and I both have dealt with cancer in our families for most of our adult lives. Both my mother (colon cancer at 57)) and Charles’ father (prostate cancer at 72) died too young. We have tried to be vigilant throughout our lives to ensure that we live full, long and healthy lives. We try to exercise, eat well and pay attention to our bodies, as well as experience balance in body, mind and spirit.
In August, I ride for the young heroes batting childhood cancer through Sickkids and this year, I raised over $1400 for this worthy cause. So, this November, we want to continue our work to promote a positive mindset toward dealing with cancer of any kind (screening and treatment with a focus on empathy and mental health).
We have decided to donate directly to St. Joseph’s Hospital Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer. This surgery is partially covered through OHIP and partially covered through donations. We will continue to donate to support Dr. Bobby Shayegan (Chief of Surgery at St. Joseph’s as of April 2023) and his team. We are grateful to be able to have been referred to the Hamilton Health Sciences because their approach to prevention and treatment is both balanced and kind.
