A Sweater for a “Little Lovey”

On 2023-12-12 by Pam

My two little friends love their stuffed animals so, recently when they were staying with us, I had a request to make a sweater for Bubbles, the stuffed elephant. It was a fun challenge and so, I went on to make one for the little rabbit that lives in their house as well. I love that they call their stuffed animals “lovies” – it makes my heart happy. After each lovey had a sweater and scarf, their was a request for matching one for the children – a simple request that made a lot of sense. Who wouldn’t want to have a matching scarf with their “lovey”?

The scarf is a simple pattern…
Chain 10 stitches.
Row 1: Double Crochet across
Row 2: Half-double Crochet across
Row 3: Single crochet across
Continue to repeat the rows until the scarf reaches the desired length.
Cut lengths of yarn for the fringe – attach with a crochet hook and trim to match both sides.

Sweater (can be made in 2 sizes – large or a bit smaller)
DC – double crochet st – stitch ch-chain sp – space sc – single crochet yo- yarn over
Shell or V – (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch
Starting at the neck of the jacket chain 44 (40)
Row 1: DC in 2nd ch from hook (counts as first dc now and throughout) and in the next 5 (5) stitches. Make a shell in the next st, DC in the next 8 (7) sts, shell in the next st. dc in the next 12 (10) stitches, shell in the next st, dc in the next 8 (7) st, shell in the next stitch, dc in the last 6 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2 – 5: DC in the 2nd st from the hook. DC across to the ch 1 sp, make shell in ch-1 space, DC across to the next ch 1 sp, shell in the ch-1 space, dc across to the next ch 1 sp, shell in the ch-1 sp, DC across to the next ch 1 sp, shell in the ch-1 sp, dc across to the beginning ch-2, dc in top of ch-2, Chain 2, turn.
Row 6: DC across to the first ch-1 sp, yo, insert hook in the first chain one sp, reach across the DCs and insert the hook in the second ch-1 sp, draw up a loop, yo and pull through 2 sts (twice) . DC across to the next ch 1 space, connect 3rd and 4th ch-1 spaces by making a DC in the ch-1 spaces. DC across to the end, including the ch-2 space. The 2 sections of skipped sts become the sleeves.
Row 7-12: Ch 2, turn. DC in each DC across. At the end of row 12, ch – 1, turn.
Sc around the entire jacket, making 3 – sc in each corner stitch. Join with a sl st in the first sc you made. Cut yarn and weave into the sweater.
To make the sleeves: Attach yarn at the arm pit, Ch – 2, DC around the armhole until it reaches the desired length (usually about 7 rounds). Single crochet around the bottom of the sleeve to finish it off, join in the first single crochet.
