2024 – The Year of the Hat
On January 7, 2024 by PamThis winter, I have set myself a goal of kitting one hat every week. I have MANY patterns for hats and there are many free patterns available on PInterest or Ravelry but, I will share the ones that I use in my blog. One of the things that I like to do is find 5 small things to do each week that are a “random act of kindness” for people in my circle. Giving someone a hat or a dishcloth or a pair of socks in a fun way to spread some joy.
This weeks hat has cables and a pom-pom.

Chunky yarn – 400 g or 300 m
5.5 mm knitting needles
Cast on 76 stitches
1st row – K1, P1
2nd row – K1, P1
Repeat the last two rows until the band measures 2 inches
Stitches:
k – knit, p – purl, st – stitch, tog – together, rep – repeat, C6F – slip next 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold at front of the work, knit next 3 sts from left – hand needle, then knit stitches from cable needle
For the hat:
1st row: Knit
2nd row: K4 (p6, k9) 4 times, p6, k5
3rd row: P1, (k1, p1) 2 times, *k7 (p1, k1) 4 times; rep from * to last 11 stitches, k6 (p1, k1) 2 times, p1
4th row: K1 (p1, k1) 2 times, *p6 (p1, k1) 4 times, p1; rep from * to last 11 sts, p6 (k1,p1) 2 times, k1
5th row: K5, (C5F, k9) 4 times, C6F, k5
6th row: as 2nd row
7th row: P1 (k1, p1) 2 times, *k7 (p1, k1) 4 times: rep from * to last 11 sts, k6 (p1, k1) 2 times, p1
8th row: K1 (p1, k1) 2 times, *p6 (p1, k1) 4 times, p1; rep from *to last 11 sts, p6 (k1, p1) 2 times, k1
Repeat last rows 3 more times.
Shape top:
1st row: k1, k3tog, k10, k3tog, (k12, k3tog) 3 times, k 10, k3tog, k1 (64 sts)
2nd row: k3, (p6, k7) 4 times, p6, k3
3rd row: k1, p2tog, *k7, p1 k3tog, p1, k1: rep from *to last 9 sts, k6, p2tog, k1 (54 sts)
4th row: k2tog, *p6 (p1, k3tog), p1 rep from * to last 8 sts, p6, k2 tog (44 sts)
5th row: k1 (C6F, k3) 4 times, C6F, k1,
6th row: k1 (p2, p2tog, p2, k3tog) 4 times, p2, p2tog, p2 p2tog, p2, k1 (31 sts)
7th row: p1 (k1, k3tog, k1, p1) 5 times (21 stitches
8th row: k1 (p3tog, k1) 5 times (11 sts)
Break yarn, thread through the 11 sts., drawn in firmly and fasten off
Make a pom-pom
Sew back seam and sew pom-pom to the top of the hat.
