Knitting HATS for charity…
I now have three hats complete and once I get to 5, I will donate them to a worthy cause. I can knit one hat per week – which takes about 3 hours. There is a general lack of appreciation for homemade gifts – it is so easy to buy a hat or mittens or scarf at Walmart or even the Dollar Store for a very cheap price. So why is handmade important?
#1. HANDMADE IS THOUGHTFUL -each item is a creation of love and skill.
#2. HANDMADE IS HIGH QUALITY – it is built to last and usually the quality of the materials used to make
the items are usually much better. (i.e. wool socks)
#3. HANDMADE IS GREEN – Products pass through fewer hands than big companies, creating a smaller
footprint. Who doesn’t support that in today’s society?
#4 .HANDMADE IS SUSTAINABLE – less or no packaging – high quality materials – local production
#5. HANDMADE IS SUPPORTIVE – a gift made by someone who cares about you builds community
#6. HANDMADE CAN BE CUSTOMISED – personalized pieces mean that you can choose colours and
designs that suit the individual’s lifestyle and personality
#7. HANDMADE HAS A STORY – the person who created the item – the artisan has spent many nights
learning a skill, perfecting a technique and pouring their passion into
what they make – every gift comes with a special story
#8. HANDMADE KEEPS TRADITIONAL SKILLS AND CRAFTS ALIVE supporting the continuation of the arts
for the next generation.
#9. HANDMADE IS UNIQUE – not mass produced – each item has its own character and his authentic
#10. HANDMADE IS BETTER FOR YOUR CONSCIENCE – you start understanding how small actions can
influence a bigger picture. It is responsible to understand
mass markets, products and unethical sourcing or low
cost labour.
So, think about the importance of homemade – anything can be created , it just takes time. The next time you are about to buy something, just stop, take a breath and think about sustainability.

Hi Pam
I have been knitting hats and mitts for kids since my retirement 13 years ago and still love it!
It is a very fulfilling way to spend an evening.
