May 2024 SOCKS
On May 23, 2024 by Pam
I am still knitting a pair of socks each month. I have talked about the benefits of knitting before but, these days, I am focused on improving the function of my vagus nerve, as well as learning how to consistently taken a few minutes each day to intentionally experience positive emotions and just feel good – not stifling the moment with worry or doubt or requirements – sitting back, trusting the process, breathing, and letting life come and be. Trusting and anticipating – focusing on ease, joy, relief, etc. Knitting is a moment – I can read while I knit, I can talk to someone, I can breathe or I can just enjoy the beauty of being. Knitting (and positive emotions) can….
1. Reduced stress and anxiety because you get in the “flow” and your attention is absorbed by serenity.
2. Improved cognitive function – fire up your brain cells with a fun pattern or an intentional focus on
positive thoughts and energy.
3. Improved self-confidence – creating something is empowering, from a sock to a positive mindset –
rewiring your subconscious to focus on just “feeling good” and being positive is healing.
4. A lesson in mindfulness can happen one stitch at a time. As we practice yoga to disconnect, slow
down and focus, we practice mindfulness and restoring our body to a calmer state. Knitting and
moments of “joy” can be your meditation.
5. It boosts dopamine and a feel-good effect. Although I could get frustrated as a beginner, I always had
a great “rush” when I finished a project or when I “figured things out” and began to make
progress. This release of dopamine can help regulate mood, sleep, digestion, blood flow and
many other important functions to a healthier you.
6. A sense of control – the world seems like an “out of control” place so, instead of dwelling on things you
can’t control, find things you can control – experience positive emotions, knitting a sock (even if
you have to take out a few stitches). Start with an easy project to build your skills and
self-confidence.
Intentionally experiencing positive emotions and knitting or crocheting are great coping tools to add to your arsenal. We need to focus on our emotional well-being and a LOT more is within your control than you realize.
