How does your garden grow?
On June 24, 2024 by PamToday, as I was sitting in the backyard, I was so surprised to see that my tomato plants are covered with blossoms and even small tomatoes. We have cucumelons and regular cucumbers and cabbage and herbs, our strawberry plants are already starting to ripen and the flowers our blooming.
The challenge of the perennial garden is to plant in such a way that you have flowers blooming at different times throughout all the seasons. It is possible and we are still working on it in our garden. Once the peonies are gone, then you have the daisies and the dahlias (which bloom all summer and into the fall). I think the miracle of growth should impress all of us.
I recently have been reading a lot about the vagus nerve and one of the things that activates our vagus nerve is gratitude. It balances out our nervous system. A low vagal tone, means you can find yourself in an ongoing state of anxiety—the fight or flight mode—in response to moments of stress. Practicing Gratitude activates our vagal nerve, thus helping to protect ourselves from these negative states. A healthy vagus nerve allows us to move appropriately between these states. Because the vagus nerve travels so widely through the body, Vagal nerve dysfunction can also cause digestive issues, inappropriate changes to heart rate or blood sugar, swallowing challenges, and more. Several things including head trauma, diabetes, viral infection, and chronic stress can cause it.
Cultivating gratitude for our bodies is one of the best ways to inspire us to care for them. Let’s add our nervous systems to our gratitude list.
