Socks, Socks and MORE Socks…
On December 6, 2024 by PamAnother month and another pair of hand knit socks. Why do I knit socks?
1. Socks are a VERY portable project. I can stuff them in my purse or bag and knit them on a plane, in the car, at a coffee shop, or while chatting after dinner. They don’t require a huge ball of yarn and once I have knit several pair, I have the pattern memorized.
2. It is very satisfying to “turn the heel” – almost like magic.
3. It is rewarding to see the sock “come to life”. A lot of knitting projects take forever to become something…socks start forming right away. You can see the toe take shape and within a couple of days, you can already be turning the heel.
4. Socks include a lot of basic knitting skills. Socks are actually VERY beginner friendly.
5. A sock project can be done in different sections – toe, foot, gusset, heel, leg and cuff.
6. A pair of socks is a very easy and fun gift for anyone, anytime – you can do ankle socks, thick socks, thin socks, slipper socks, etc. People love getting a pair of homemade socks.
7. Hand knit socks are VERY comfortable.
8. There are endless possibilities of patterns. I have gotten used to toe up socks but, there are patterns for all kinds of socks, including knitting 2 socks at once.
9. You can always find people knitting socks – online or in person.
10. You can use socks to add something fun to your outfit.
Socks are one of my favourite things to knit…for all the reasons above. Probably the thing I like most about knitting socks is the variety of different types of yarn – colour, thickness, design, type of yarn, etc. if you use self-striping sock yarn, you make stunning and impressive socks just by knitting.
