The Final 21 Books of 2024

On 2025-01-02 by Pam

I made it – 175 books in 2024. I have set a new goal for 175 books in 2025. I left my goal the same because that seems to be my personal “zone”. I want my goal to be achievable – it is about 15 books a month. I like to delve into some thick books and so any more than that would be very difficult.

Fiction
Tell Me Everything by Cambria Brockman
This is a story of friendship, heartbreak, and in the end, betrayal. Murder on a college campus tears apart a group of friends – there are MANY layers to this murder mystery.

One of the Girls by Lucy Clarke
A Greek Island is the setting for this psychological thriller – with terrifying and unbelievable twists and turns.

Harry’s Trees by Jon Cohen
One of my favourites this year, a man’s life is turned upside down and he begins to understand the importance of taking risks, standing your ground and moving forward.

Hemlock by Kiersten Modglin
Romance and suspense and a poisonous past all combine to dig up skeletons and make you wonder if the protagonist will survive her return home.

The Ex by Freida McFadden
McFadden can wind a story around twists and turns…she writes to make you wonder what will happen and which woman will come out alive.

The Author’s Guide to Murder by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, Karen White
This Agatha Christie style murder mystery is set in the Highlands of Scotland. Three authors arrive at the castles and murder ensues. Who is the murderer?

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah
A story of friendship and loss – beautifully written.

Fly Away by Kristin Hannah
Loss brings tragedy and friends find their way back to each other.

The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny
Inspector Gamache and company step out and step up – risking everything to ensure safety and bring the criminals to justice. This series never fails to delight.

The Answer is No by Fredrik Backman
The entertaining story of the man who has always said no….until…

The Gift by Freida McFadden
A retelling of the Gift of the Magi – a gripping thriller with a Christmas Theme.

The Caregiver by N.L. Hinkens
A young mother hires a caregiver and turns her life upside down – murder, secrets and lies.

NON-FICTION
A High-Performing Mind: Strengthen Your Mind and Live Your Best Life by Andrew D. Thompson
Nothing new here but, a very concise package that outlines 12 steps to increase your mental capacity and overcome obstacles.

How to Be Old: The coolest book with two subtitles by Kenneth Kaszak
A bit of wisdom mixed in with some advice on being a writer and how to age successfully.

Somehow by Anne Lamott
As always, beautiful stories that weave your mind around what it means to love and live in the real world.

Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness
by Steve Magness
The four pillars that cultivate resilience are outlined and you might be surprised that just denying and pushing through are NOT the ways to be “tough”.

Reconciling History: A Story of Canada by Jody Wilson-Raybould and Roshan Danesh
With real voices from Canada’s past, the story of our combined indigenous and non-indigenous history is wound around the totem pole. We need a shared history to move forward.

Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg
How do you steer a conversation to a successful conclusion? Through case studies and story, the author gives tips on listening and getting other people to tell their story.

The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad You Did) by Phillippa Perry
This book was up and down for me – there were a lot of good thoughts like, how your upbringing influences your parenting style and breaking negative cycles and patterns in interactions between you and your children. Some of her more direct advice (about family beds, etc.) did not sit with me but, that is all style. I enjoyed the read and, as always, when I read a non-fiction, I agreed with some and took the parts that made sense for my life and thinking.

Shifting To the Positive: A Woman’s Guide to Positive Thinking by Nina Madsen
This book is just a guide to being more self-compassionate, taking time for mindfulness and empowering women to embrace both solitude and connections to nurture their well-being.

How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
This book came up on the list of books that assist businesses in being successful in serving and keeping clients. It includes 30 pieces of sage advice that not only apply to business but to relationships and any interaction you have with another person.
