My Flock of Easter Sheep
On 2025-04-14 by PamAs the Easter season approached, I set a goal to knit 25 sheep. I have one more to go (and may knit a few more) before Good Friday. We have also baked countless loaves of paska. All these Easter treats will be distributed to friends and neighbours in order to celebrate Easter. These little lambs are filled with a plastic egg that is filled with treats.
Easter is the most important day for Christians, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the end of Lent. Church services, family meals, Easter egg hunts, and decorating eggs are common ways to celebrate Easter. Unlike Christmas, Easter’s date changes each year, determined by the first full moon after the spring equinox. Eggs and bunnies, lambs and chicks are not just Easter decorations but also symbols of fertility, new life, and rebirth. The Easter Bunny tradition originated in Germany, with early mentions dating back to the 16th century. Decorated Easter eggs, especially painted ones, have a long history, with some traditions tracing back to pagan spring festivals in Ukraine. The first hollow chocolate Easter egg was made in 1873 by the Bristolian Fry family. Canadians spend billions on Easter candy, with chocolate being the most popular. The use of pastel colors in Easter decorations, like eggs, often has religious significance. In the 19th century, wealthy individuals would wear new hats, or bonnets, after church services on Easter, marking the end of the season.
Celebrate life and family and friends and always look for ways to make someone else’s life better!
