What should you be eating?
On 2025-04-23 by PamI have been reading a book called, “Eat Your Age: Feel Younger, Be Happier, Live Longer” by Ian K. Smith, MD. I started reading the book because I was interested in another perspective on eating well. The book reviews each decade and talks about the “what” and “why” of choosing foods. One of the things he talks about in the book is spices. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a literal cupboard (2 full shelves) full of spices and a complete spice rack. He talks about the nutrients that we need – antioxidants, calcium, slow-burning carbs, fiber iron, magnesium, monounsaturated fats, Omega-3s – fortified foods, nuts and seeds, plant oils, potassium, probiotics, protein, Vitamin B6, B9. B12 and Vitamins C and D. The book includes a 30-day meal plan for each decade and suggestions for food that keeps you healthy and strong.
Food like – Greek Yogurt and Oatmeal, Flax, eggs and honey – berries and almond butter, chia and cottage cheese, spinach and kale – granola, salmon, capers, shrimp and avocado – quinoa, beans, lentils – turkey and chicken – feta cheese, cranberries, nuts and olive oil – spices – brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, toful, broccoli, cauliflower – cod, trout, apples, tomato, carrot, cucumber – small amounts of beef and port – LOTS of vegetables and fruit
We really eat a balance of these foods. The book does include lots of recipes and lots of research about what really supports health and longevity.
