The Dishcloth Saga Continues Every Week

How much would you pay for a homemade dishcloth? Most people would not think twice about walking by a craft booth filled with homemade sewn, knit or crocheted items. I have been there – both walking by and trying to sell – people generally do not want to pay what something is worth. In order to pay for the materials, I would need to charge $5 and that is with NO money to pay myself for my time. My reaction to the undervaluing of homemade items is to give them away. I like making things as a hobby. If I don’t want something for myself, I find someone to give it to. I don’t worry about trying to make money off of it, I don’t get offended that someone does not appreciate something I give them. It is my time, my hobby and my choice. For me, that is the best way. I often never see the child or person wear the thing I made or ever see it being used and that is just the way it is. I had the joy of making it and if I have an expectation for appreciation, I am often disappointed. Most people (because they don’t make things for themselves) just don’t really understand the value of homemade. The moral of the story is to find purpose in your life by doing what you love and hoping that they other person loves what you share with them – even if just a little bit and even if you never see or find out how they have enjoyed it.
