Lupins in the Garden
We grew our lupins from seed several years ago. We planted them in our front garden and they have spread like wildfire.
Lupins are striking members of the legume family known for their vibrant, towering flower spires. Native to both the Americas and the Mediterranean, these plants are popular garden additions that feature palmate leaves and rich nitrogen-fixing properties.
A Long Lifespan: While annual species exist, many of the beloved hybrid garden lupins (such as the Russell hybrids) are perennials. When properly maintained in full sun and well-drained soil, a single plant can live for 6 to 10 years
Named After a Wolf: The genus name Lupinus comes from the Latin word lupus, meaning wolf. This is because people once believed the plant aggressively stripped nutrients from the soil, much like a ravenous wolf.
They Actually Improve Soil: Contrary to the wolf myth, lupins are part of the pea family and naturally replenish the earth. They form a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a vital plant fertilizer.
Blooms Travel Bottom-Up: Lupin flowers grow in dense, elongated clusters. A fascinating feature of these blooms is that they open progressively from the bottom of the stalk upward.
Ancient Superfood: Long before they were garden staples, lupins were cultivated by ancient Egyptians and Romans as a food source. They are highly nutritious, dense in protein, fiber, and essential minerals.
Seeds Require Preparation: Wild lupin seeds naturally contain high levels of toxic alkaloids that can cause intoxication if ingested. Before they can be safely consumed as a snack or ground into flour, they must be meticulously soaked and boiled to leach out these compounds.
Toxic to Livestock: Certain wild and cultivated varieties contain levels of alkaloids that are poisonous to grazing livestock. Toxicity levels can vary depending on the plant’s age and the specific species.
Flower Color Fades After Pollination: Lupin flowers change color after they have been successfully pollinated. This clever biological trick directs pollinators (like bees) away from pollinated flowers, so they focus entirely on unpollinated ones.
Ecological Powerhouses: Because they can thrive in poor, sandy, or degraded soils, lupins are frequently used in ecological restoration projects and as “green manure” to revive exhausted agricultural lands.
Native to Ontario: If you are exploring the local Canadian wilderness around Southern Ontario (like the areas near Welland), you may stumble upon the native wild lupin (Lupinus perennis). It serves as a vital larval host for rare butterflies, such as the Karner Blue.
