Log Cabin Quilt – Complete
The final step in completing the log cabin scrap quilt is to put the binding on the quilt. I used bias binding. I sewed the initial edging of the bias binding to the right side of the quilt. I then wrapped it the back of the quilt and blind-stitched ALL the way around the quilt
My Log Cabin Quilt – Sashing
All the rows of my log cabin single bed quilt are complete. I have not purchased any material to complete this quilt and I am really happy about that. I am now starting to sash the pieces together. I have attached a video on sashing to help you if you want to try this yourself.
Scrap Log Cabin Quilt – Step 2
In the process of creating my quilt for the second spare bed, I had to decide how to “quilt-as-you-go”. I am quilting it in strips using a diamond pattern. I have three different backings that I am using. I used three different backing fabrics because I didn’t want to purchase any fabric. Everything I have
A “Quilted” Twister Quilt
I am so excited to share my completed twister quilt. I really wanted to have homemade quilts on all the beds in my house. I designed this quilt myself and used the “twister” ruler to create the blocks with ALL scraps and fabric from my stash. I purchased fabric for the backing. I am so
The Scrap Log Cabin Quilt – Part 2
I have created 48 log cabin blocks out of scraps from my fabric stash. Once the blocks were complete, I had to decide about the backing. I was determined to use fabric that I already had in my collection so, I started digging. I was able to find fabric and this began the assembling portion
The Log Cabin Quilt Block
The log cabin quilt is a symbol of home because the blocks design mimics a literal log cabin, symbolizing shelter, security, and the beautiful spirit of the settler on the frontier. When you use a red center on your block it signifies the hearth (fireplace) which was the heart of the home. The log cabin
Twister Quilt – Stage 2
In my quest to meet the goal of having every bed in my house with a homemade quilt, I am moving forward to create the first of the two quilts that I plan to complete this winter. This will go on the double bed in the spare room and I will soon be starting a
Working on the Twister Quilt
This project has been on-going. Creating a twister requires several steps that result in a rectangle that is a combination of some beautiful colours. I completed 8 different rectangles and now I am in the process of sewing them together to make a quilt. I am adding borders that will end up creating a large
Hexagon Runner for Autumn
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the runner on the shelf in my front hall was for summer. For most people this would not matter at all…to me, it was an opportunity to find some fabric and create something. I wanted to try to do it all on the machine this time and
Creating a New Twister Quilt
Should I ever have a store-bought quilt in my house? In my spare room, I actually have a very old quilt that I bought many years ago. I took a look at it and decided it was time to create a new quilt for this bed. I am now creating 8 small twisters. I will
New Baby? New Quilt
If you’re looking for ways to keep the kiddos warm and provide some fun activities all in one, this project has you “covered”. I Spy Quilts are quilts made with pictorial or novelty quilting fabrics. In 1863 Jane Stickle Quilt made the first I spy quilt. This quilt inspires quilters all over the world will be
Baby Quilt – “I Spy”
Whenever I hear that someone has had a baby, I always think about a quilt. It is so great to have a beautiful baby quilt to lay down to put your baby on for “tummy time” or to snuggle up with as a toddler when you are reading a good book. The “I Spy” quilt
Prairie Points on My Latest Quilt
The quilt that I just completed included Prairie Points. Prairie points are a quilting technique where fabric square are folded into triangles and used as a decorative edge finish or inserted into seams to add dimension and texture to quilts and other projects. They are a classic alternative to traditional quilt binding and can be used
Working on a Baby Quilt
I have made a lot of baby quilts and I have re-used the same pattern most of the time. It is a beautiful pattern and it allows for a lot of creativity. This time, I wanted to try something new and I was pleasantly surprised and how I was able to figure it out (lots
The Re-Created Cardinal
I started trying foundation paper piecing a few years ago and started making birds. I love doing it and it is challenging. I do not get things as perfectly matched as is described below but, I feel that creating something from nature (like a bird) allows you to be less perfect because nature is not
I Spy Quilt
I haven’t created an “I Spy” quilt in quite some time but, the birth of my friend’s grandson inspired me to look through my novelty fabric and make a plan. The results are always fun and in this case, the father is a childhood friend of our boys and so it was fun to think
The Beautiful Blue Jay
On the warmer days in various seasons, we often sit on the front porch and feed the squirrels and the blue jays. I have created one bird to hang in our bedroom but, I wanted to create a blue jay given that we have such beautiful ones in our garden. Paper piecing is not easy
The Quilted Jacket
I have completed my quilted coat. I started working on this project in the summer by first going through the fabric that I currently own to create my own “fabric” to match the pieces of the pattern. This meant sewing together pieces of fabric big enough for the 2 sleeves, 2 front panels and the
Butterflies for the Baby
When I found out that my friend was going to be a grandma, I immediately started searching through my fabric for something to inspire me to create a quilt. I came across several different butterfly prints and I was immediately in “creative” mode. I used my “classic” baby quilt pattern and I embroidered a heart
An Autumn Project
I have created my own fabric before – it is called crumb quilted. I used it to make a pillow. This Autumn, I am working on a coat. I have currently created all the fabric for the front pieces, the arms and the back by sewing together pieces of fabric from my collection (and a
Fun in the City – Beautiful Canadian Quilts
We started the day with a stop at Kelly’s Gluten Free Bakery in Burlington for muffins and coffee on our way to spend the day with Zachary. We hopped on the Go Train in Burlington and headed for Mimico Station – a short walk to Zachary’s apartment. Zach had ordered a gluten free pizza from
Quilting a Mountain
Our son, Sebastian is a “climber” – that does not mean the “ladder of success” but, rather mountains, cliffs and climbing gyms. He asked for a quilt of a mountain and so, Charles designed one and we created it. Sebastian loves to climb and his brother, Zachary has started climbing with him (in a climbing
The 90-Minute Quilt
Can you sew a cute little TV watching quilt in a morning? Yes, you can! I gathered together the fabric, cut 35 – 6 inch squares, created a pattern and sewing it all together. I found some backing, put the front and backing right sides together and put batting on top, sewed it all together
Christmas Tree Skirt
I am always looking for a new challenge and when I packed up my Christmas decorations this year, I decided to try to create a new tree skirt. :As usual, I started with a search – pinterest, etc. to find some ideas. I ended up doing a “version” – as I always tend to modify
A Quilt from 1718
As I continue to challenge myself with quilting projects, I look at a variety of options. I like designing my own quilts at times and then, as always, I like looking and reading about quilts designed by others. My husband, Charles found this article about a quilt created in 1718. If you are interested, read
Triangle Quilt
This quilt was challenging – there was a lot of matching that did not come out perfectly I used the owl buttons to assist with improving the look of the quilt as well as covering a few issues at some joins. I love the colours and the design and the quilting. The summer is not
The Triangle Quilt Challenge
Every time I start a new quilt, I look for something different and challenging. The triangle quilt has lots of POINTS but, that is part of the fun and challenge of the quilt. I am definitely not perfect in matching my points. As I keep sewing it together, I am getting better at figuring things
Turtles….All the Way Down – Baby Quilt
Quilting is a way of giving back. Most of my quilts go out into the world and they are not perfect…they are handmade. This little quilt will be sent out once the a new little one is born, all the way to British Columbia. I used some fabric that I had and some that I
Table Runners – A Great Place to Start Quilting
If you want to start quilting, consider starting with a table runner. It can be as large or small as you want it to be and it can be put together in one piece, or in hexagons, or blocks, etc. You can applique something onto a table runner. Modern homes don’t tend to have a
The Quilting Group and the Next Generation
The history of quilting can be traced back at least to medieval times. The V&A has early examples in its collection from Europe, India and the Far East. The word ‘quilt’ – linked to the Latin word ‘culcita’, meaning a bolster or cushion – seems to have first been used in England in the 13th century.Quilting
A NEW Baby Quilt…
A new baby is always an opportunity to celebrate all that is amazing about life. The birth of a child is a miracle and every family who has experienced this feels blessed. Babies are LOTS of work but, life is worth the effort and, in my case, once you see your children grow up and
The Wanderer’s Wife – Moving Forward – The next step and a little bit of philosophy about life….
There is a saying about life – you must keep moving forward. During times when I have experienced hardship, loss or trauma, I have always kept moved forward. I don’t believe that you ever move “on” from hardship, loss or trauma but, we keep propelling forward because that is the only way. One of my
The Wanderer’s Wife – Almost Done!
Now that the front of the quilt is complete, it was time to think about the back of the quilt. You can find backing material that is wide and large but, in keeping with the “use your stash” theme of this project, I decided to create my own backing. I measured the quilt and determined
Back to The Wanderer’s Wife
After a short break for a Christmas project, we are working VERY hard to complete this quilt. The pattern is not easy to follow and it has become a “make it work” job. I have worked hard to use up as many scraps as I can for this project – and I have used up
Holiday (or Winter) Placemats
Afew years ago, I made a set of placemats – I basically sewed a rectangle with some batting in between, turned it right side out, did a finishing seam around the edge and pressed it – pretty straight forward and a great way to start. This year, our quilting group was looking for a little
The Modern Quilt
Traditional quilts rely on a grid of regularly repeating designs, symmetry, sashing, borders, often complicated patchwork, and simple quilting. In contrast, modern quilts go off the grid and use asymmetry, less fuss, minimalist designs, and a more improvisational style with unusual arrangements of blocks and settings. This quilt is for a young couple – with
A Snuggly Flannel Blanket (that is easy to make)
A couple of years ago, I made a “rag”quilt for our uncle. I have posted the link below: https://noroom4phonies.com/2021/10/22/rag-quilt-for-uncle-walt/ I love these cozy blankets because they are layers of felt, with batting of any thickness in between and they are easy to make and a great gift (which these blankets will be this Christmas). You
The Wanderer’s Wife is BACK…
Life has been a little crazy lately but we are managing to put our quilts together. Is it easy? Well, it is challenging and fun! The strips of fabric that are part of the design allow you to “make it work” because you can add or subract a strip, make it thinner or thicker…whatever is
The Shop Hop
This year, Heather came up with the VERY fun idea of participating in the Shop Hop. Eleven quilt stores from Tillsonburg, Woodstock, New Hamburg, Perth Sound, St. Catharines, Hamilton, Mount Brydges, Georgetown, Shakespeare, Hamilton and Stratford participated in the event. At each store, you received a quilt block and when you have them all, you
My Super Huge Sampler Quilt is Home
Stitcharie Quilt Shop did an outstanding job on my quilt – the batting is pure wool and they did it in record time and at a VERY reasonable price. I am now working on the binding. I have completed the machine sewing of it (see my post on the Flat Iron case for a tutorial
Flat Iron Travel Case
It is always fun to try something new and this project was a request from a friend – for her mother-in-law. We first had a fun discussion about it being a travel case for a FLAT iron and not a CLOTHES iron and I credit my friend Jayde for finding this pattern. It is simple
My Finished Super-Large Sampler Quilt
Today was an amazing day! First of all, we have taken 4 days of vacation in Sarnia…with our bikes and beach gear…ready to relax…books and knitting and excellent food – and even some local theater later in the week. http://www.imperialtheatre.net/ Our first stop was a trip to Petrolia to pick up almost (only needs binding)

My paper piecing bird is almost complete – in only needs a log cabin border – and I will have it framed for our bedroom. The baby romper has pockets…ready for a collar and ruffle and zipper…. The pillow to match our bedroom quilt is taking shape – the center panel of pillow one is
Quilting In June (and a little sewing)
I love multiple projects and so, I thought I would take a moment and share my June 2022 list. One of our bigger projects this year is putting together our new bedroom as empty nesters. It has been so much fun! Two of my projects are part of the room completion: pillows to match my
The Super Size Sampler Bedroom Quilt – More Pillow Accents
I have completed three beautiful pillow accents to compliment my quilt – that is currently being completed with a long arm machine. All of the pillows have been completed with the leftover fabric from the quilt. In total, I would like to complete about 6-8 pillows, including a couple of bolsters.
The Wanderer’s Wife – Organization Day!
We are making progress on our quilt. We have basically completed all the main blocks and we are working on the filler blocks. Last week, we decided that we really needed an organizational tool to keep track of everything. So, I commissioned my husband, Charles to create us just such an instrument. I have attached
A Little Update on the Wanderer’s Wife…
We had a short hiatus, but now we are back. Most of the main blocks are finished – we are on the last one and then we will be creating the “filler blocks” – of which there are many. We are now considering how to keep everything straight and so, a spread sheet will be
Quilted Pillows for a New Bedroom
While I wait for my great, big sampler quilt to be completed (large arm quilted), I am creating accent pillows for our new bedroom. The room is painted and ready to be finished with the quilt when it is ready. I am using the leftover pieces of fabric from the quilt, as well as some
The Wanderer’s Wife…always grateful for my Quilting Group…
A shout out to Sheila who has joined our group as colour consultant and coach. No job is too big or small – pressing fabric, reading patterns, consulting on fabric choices. We love having Sheila as part of our group! We are accumulating a LOT of blocks! Are they the right size? Not all of
My Quilting Group and The Wanderer’s Wife
Every quilting session is an adventure with this pattern! Will it come out the right size? Should we try to “match” the colour scheme or go “rogue”? We have continued to create the “main” blocks of the quilt and then we will move to creating the supplementary blocks (of which there are MANY). The Wanderer’s
Quilt Block 12 – I DID IT!!
I have completed all 12 blocks and pieced together my quilt for the Quilt-a-Long for http://quiltsocial.com. The Completed Super-Huge Log Cabin – Sampler Quilt
It is now ready to send to Stitcharie in Petrolia https://www.stitcharie.com/ to be made into a beautiful addition to our new bedroom. I will update you on wall colours, etc. This has been a project that has taken over two years. Without my amazing quilting group, Heather and Margaret and my cheerleader, Wendy, I would
The Wanderer’s Wife – The Journey Continues…
What did we learn today? Lay out your pieces before you start sewing the block together…measure and cut carefully and it IS possible to create a block that is exactly the size it is supposed to be AND beautifully matched fabrics are great but, a little ‘CONTRAST CRAZY” has never hurt anyone!!
The Little Twister Baby Quilt
There is nothing that I enjoy more than celebrating the birth of babies! I was so happy to make this quilt for our friend and colleague, Caitlin to celebrate the birth of her daughter, Skye Olivia. The Lil’ Twisters is a ruler that creates the pinwheel pattern and I added the strips and blocks to
The Super Sampler Quilt Update
I have now completely assembled the blocks. I need to add three borders – thin, thicker and thick and then I will be sending it away with the backing fabric to be quilted on a long arm machine. I have learned SO much – the 5- Stitch Trick was my go-to for ensuring that all
The Wanderer’s Wife – My Quilting Group and Back to Square One
Can I share how much I love my quilting group and the friendship we have developed? We have SO MUCH FUN and we change our minds….A LOT and we don’t always agree and we learn from each other every. single. day. We had missed a couple of weeks because life interfered. We were all back
Quilt Social – Block 11 – Almost there….

The Super Size Sampler Quilt
The time has come! All the blocks are sewn – log cabin and sampler blocks and the design has been photographed and I have begun to sew it together. This will be quilted on a long arm quilting machine by someone else – paid for because it would not be possible to machine quilt something
Day 3 – My Quilting Group and the Wanderer’s Wife – What size IS a finished block?
We spent the first part of today making a plan – do we work our way through the book, block by block or do we create the quilt one section at a time? Do we care if all of our finished blocks are the same size (I still can’t manage to make mine the same
My Quilting Group and The Wanderer’s Wife and the Tale of the 1/4″ Seam
Our journey of Block 1 continues with assembling all the blocks. How do two blocks that were cut exactly the same come out totally different sizes? Quilting is full of surprises and the phrase “make it work”. Heather’s block measured exactly 9″ when it was completed – my block measured exactly 10″ – both blocks
Quilt Social Quilt-a-long Block 10

The Ultimate Stash Busting Crumb Quilt Pillow
I submitted this idea to #welikesewing and it was accepted as a design for their January issue. You can find it here: https://welikesewing.com/articles/ultimate-scrapbuster-crumb-quilt-pillow/?t=1930 It is a great way to use of scraps of fabric and create your own “fabric”. I loved doing it. I have had the privilege of submitting designs and projects to several
Block 9 – Spectrum Quilt-a-Long with Quilt Social
Block 10-12 and the final product will be published from February to April. I learned a lot following this quilt-a-long. I like trying new things and this quilt-a-long is designed to practice a lot of the same things over and over again. It is great for a beginning quilter and you use several techniques that
Have you been following my Quilt-a-Long?

Twisted Pole Wall Hanging/Table Runner
This is a quick and easy project – the pattern is free and you can use any fabric. It would make a great table runner but, I decided to hang it on my French door for the Holiday Season. We made this for a project for a Quilting Group – it was so much fun
