The Log Cabin Quilt Block
The log cabin quilt is a symbol of home because the blocks design mimics a literal log cabin, symbolizing shelter, security, and the beautiful spirit of the settler on the frontier. When you use a red center on your block it signifies the hearth (fireplace) which was the heart of the home. The log cabin quilt surged in popularity during the Civil War (1860’s) as women made them to raise funds for the Union Army, honouring Abraham Lincoln, who was raised in a log cabin. There is an urban myth that suggests that black-centered blocks signaled safe houses on the Underground Railroad. Originally, these blocks were made from leftover fabric scraps, reflecting the frugality and resourcefulness that existed during pioneer times. A common variation uses light fabrics on one side and dark on the other, representing day/night or good/bad times. It is one of history’s oldest block designs, reflected on ancient mummies. There are many different layouts for the log cabin block, including “courthouse steps” , “pineapple”, and “barn raising” blocks. Strips (logs) are added sequentially around the center, building outward. Pre-cut fabric strips (Jelly Rolls) have made this one complex pattern much simpler, faster to construct and accessible.
I am creating a single bed quilt using the log cabin design and the scrap fabric version that was popular in the past. I have also created the light/dark version. I will post the completed log cabin quilt that I am making because I want all the beds in my home to have homemade quilts.
