How do you know if someone is dysfunctional?
We all watch the world around us these days and think that things and people around us (even ourselves sometimes) are dysfunctional. What makes people and institutions dysfunctional?
1. When needed conversations are resisted, dysfunction results.
2. Dysfunction causes gaslighting – it often causes people on the other side to feel crazy or blame
yourself.
3. Dysfunctional people lack self awareness and do not reflect on their actions or choices.
4. Dysfunctional people are emotionally tone-deaf and they are hurtful towards others.
5. Dysfunctional people often over-react and immerse themselves in drama or cause drama.
6. Dysfunctional people often have inappropriate body language, facial expressions, tone of
voice or timing.
7. Dysfunctional people or institutions never own their part of a conflict or problem.
8. Dysfunction and empathy do not exist together.
9. Dysfunctional people do not respect boundaries.
10. Dysfunctional people and institutions don’t take responsibility for their actions.
11. Dysfunctional people do not acknowledge unhealed trauma, nor do they work on themselves.
They don’t engage in accountability for their lives and expect others to bail them out.
12. Dysfunctional people rewrite history for their own version of the truth, they ignore facts and can’t
discern the truth.
13. A dysfunctional person will use emotional blackmail to sabotage and control themselves and others.
14. Dysfunctional people sweep their own wrongdoing under the rug to avoid accountability and to
come across as a victim in order to pull others into their web.
15. Dysfunctional people weaponize things and people against each other. They manipulate to their
own advantage and to take the attention off of the chaos that they cause. A manipulative
person will do anything to resist feeling controlled.
We need to be “sober-minded” and “watchful” in relationships.
