Sewing Tutorial: A Sturdy, Quilted Pouch for Your Airwrap + Accessories

When it comes to sewing projects, making something three-dimensional is a fun challenge. Our future daughter-in-law, Angel, has a Dyson Airwrap hair curling tool. It comes in a rigid container, but for travel, she wanted a soft case for it and asked if we could make one. She picked a lovely pink denim for the inside and a floral print for the outside of the case.

We took the measurements of the Airwrap and of the accessories that come with it and decided we would make a boxy pouch. For a bit of firmness, lightweight iron-on interfacing was joined to the denim fabric and the floral was top-stitched on quilt batting in diagonal lines that are 0.5 inch apart from each other.
To figure out how much fabric we needed to make a case that would hold the Airwrap and its accessories, we first used this calculator on Jan Howell’s Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5dQ5sFrt-I

Then we cut out two rectangles and made them sturdier as explained above.

You can see the pouch with the corners cut here. Jan’s video teaches how to make French seams for these corners which end up creating the box shape and keep all raw edges invisible.

For the accessories, I took some rectangles and placed a folded piece of quilt batting and captured it inside. Then I sewed the ends of the padded rectangles together to make these rings.

The rings were hand-stitched to each other and to the lining of the bag to one side.

Angel is happy with how the boxy pouch turned out and her accessories are all tidy. There is additional room for any hair products that she wants to apply as well. It was a fun project to make for her birthday.
