My Bougainvillea
I have had two bougainvillea plants since living here. The first lasted 4 years, coming in the house for winter and back out by the pool for summer. This plant is my second and it is enjoying its second summer outside by the pool. My first plant would take all summer to bloom; however, this plant started blooming almost immediately when it came outside. It has been gorgeous all summer long. The bougainvillea always reminds me of our trip to Portugal – they cover walls and live in gardens all over the country. I am so thankful that I can make this beautiful “paper” flower a part of my garden. The colourful parts of the plant are actually leaves, while the blossoms are the tiny white or yellow flowers that bloom in side the leaves. You can see the tiny white flowers in the pictures below. A bougainvillea is a stunning addition to any garden. It will loose it colour in winter but, in my experience, the warm sun will revive it in summer once it is outside.
Bougainvillea flowers symbolize passion, beauty and resilience with meanings varying across cultures. In some contexts, they represent welcoming visitors, peace, and even free trade. The vibrant colors, often mistaken for petals, are actually bracts surrounding the tiny flowers.
